Glendale Town Center

Indianapolis, Indiana
Client: Kite Realty Group

Constructed in 1958, the Glendale Center Mall was one of the area’s premiere retail destinations, yet it eventually declined as anchor stores abandoned the location. In recent years, Kite Realty Group has made tremendous efforts to revitalize the mall and restore its prominent place within the community.

The redeveloped and renamed Glendale Town Center retains important community links like its local public library branch while adding new medical and professional office space and attracting strong retail anchors such as Target, Macy’s and Lowe’s. CONTEXT was commissioned to help connect the Center’s interstitial spaces with a cohesive plant palette emphasizing pedestrian connections and primary vehicular routes. Working over existing subterranean utility tunnels required creative solutions to both planting and irrigation design. In such cases where trees would not be viable, planted urns were used instead to add form and color.
